McAfee Total Protection 2010 security software

McAfee has enhanced its 2010 line of security software with scans that are up to eight times faster.

Symantec says the software, which was initially launched late last year, now has a number of new features and will be automatically rolled-out free of charge to customers that have already purchased the 2010 version of McAfee Total Protection or McAfee Internet Security.

Users of the 2010 version of McAfee AntiVirus Plus will be able to download the enhanced version shortly.

The new-look software now features web protection, which ensures dangerous downloads and web page are identified and blocked before getting anywhere near the PC. Also news is McAfee smart timer, which will postpone updates and scheduled scans until a PC is idle, rather than taking up valuable processing cycles.

McAfee has added the ability to automatically back up photos, videos and files to an online service for free for the length of the subscription.

McAfee Internet Security customers get 1GB while McAfee Total Protection users can enjoy 2GB.

Also new in the enhanced software are detailed reports about the number of threats blocked and information about recent scans and activity, and the ability to automatically adjust the interface to fit smaller screen sizes such as netbooks.

McAfee said it had improved its parental controls offering with even more age profiles, and modified the Home Network Defense feature in the McAfee Total Protection to help users identify and block intruders from accessing the PC on their home network.

"The new enhancements for this 2010 Q1 release offer consumers what they want: strong and unobtrusive protection with market-leading performance. With McAfee, consumers are protected by the same intelligence and technology used to defend governments and Fortune 500 companies around the world," said Javed Hasan from McAfee.

McAfee Total Protection software costs £59.99 for a three-user licence, while McAfee Internet Security software is priced at £49.99 for a three-user license,

McAfee AntiVirus Plus software cost £39.99 for one license or £44.99 for a three-user licence.
