Pentax's latest compact camera is a 12.1Mp model with a 5x optical zoom and a 28mm wide-angle lens. The Optio M90 costs around £199.

The optical zoom extends to 140mm lens equivalent and is augmented by a 5x digital zoom. The 23mm-thick camera can also capture VGA (480x360-pixel) quality video footage at 30 frames per second. It has a 2.7in LCD.

Aimed at photo fans who want a fair amount of automation, the Optio M90 offers face detection, smile- and blink-detection and a choice of 20 preset scene modes. Light settings and focal length are adjusted depending on the scene type specified. A dedicated Backlight mode can be used where there's too much sun or the subject is facing away from the light. Panoramas can also be created by selecting a button on the camera.

The Pentax Optio M90 camera goes onsale later this month and costs £199 inc VAT. It comes in either red or black.
