Nikon Coolpix S30 'family' camera arrives

Large buttons and simple menus make taking photos simple

Nikon has added another member to its Coolpix compact camera family. The S30 is a 10Mp model with a 3x (29-87mm) optical zoom and is specifically being aimed at families. Shockproof and waterproof to 3m, it has a very straightforward menu layout with large buttons that allow one-touch video recording and photo review.

A 2.7in LCD is used for image composition. Elements such as anti-blur (image stabilisation), vibration reduction and face recognition kick in automatically. The Nikon Coolpix S30 has a flash, auto red-eye reduction, 720p video recorder and is powered by easily replaceable AA batteries.

Novice digital camera users are unlikely to come unstuck using the S30: the flash is positioned such that it isn’t easy to accidentally cover up as you take a shot, and the camera is set to power off after three minutes of idle time, saving red-faced out of battery instances.

The Nikon Coolpix S30 will come in a choice of silver, black, pink or blue finishes. Pricing and availability details have not yet been announced.
