Samsung MultiView MV800 3D digital camera debuts

16Mp camera screen does flip-out tricks and self-portraits

While the ongoing story of Apple preventing Samsung from showcasing its new Galaxy 7.7 tablet rumbles on, two innovations in particular caught our eye at IFA this year. The Galaxy Note hybrid smartphone and tablet was one; the other is this slimline digital camera with a flipout screen reminisicent of a Nintendo DS games console.

The Samsung MultiView MV800 has a 3in capacitive touchscreen display that flips upwards and can be angled to capture otherwise hard-to-shoot scenes. One of the most obvious uses is for taking a self-portrait. The camera is able to detect whether it is being held in landscape or portrait mode. A dedicated shutter button on the rear is used to trigger shots when the flip-up screen is being used .

Oddly, Samsung has not included any shoot and share options on this camera. It takes microSD cards rather than the cheaper standard SD Card for which Eye-Fi cards for wireless image sharing are available. Another reason we expected some form of connectivity is that the Samsung MultiView MV800 includes support for a range of apps. It doubles as a small e-book reader and has a dedicated playback mode for viewing your handiwork. A comic book option lets you view and present collections of images works well as an intuitive

The MV800 has a 5x optical zoom spanning 26mm to 130mm, can capture 720p video at either 15 or 30 frames per second and can also capture 3D MPO photos. It will go onsale later this month for around £279 inc VAT.
