Olympus SZ-30MR 16Mp compact camera

The Olympus SZ-30MR is a 16Mp compact camera costing around £299. This combination sounds pretty impressive, but there's actually even more under the hood that SZ-30MR's sombre black cladding suggests.

An obvious selling point is its super-zoom credentials of 24x, allowing shots to be captured anywhere from 25mm to 600mm distant. But the really impressive feat is that it can also capture full HD video at 1080p while simultaneously capturing the action with its 16Mp camera lens.

Olympus suggests this Multi Recording option could be useful if you want to capture the full scope of a scene but also have a high resolution close-up photograph of someone in the same shot. It can also be used to capture the same shot or scene at more than one resolution setting, making it suitable for output to the web and to an HD TV with no downscaling required. The camera is powered by a dual engine TruePic III processor and is compatible with Eye-Fi SD memory cards for wireless photo uploads and emailing.

The Olympus SZ-30MR has a number of preset scene modes and a range of magic filters including two new ones – watercolour and sparkle – that can be overlaid over a shot or video footage as it's taken. The Olympus SZ-30MR will go onsale in the UK in late April for around £299.

The Olympus SZ-30MR has a 16Mp CCD and can capture HD video at 1080p at the same time as taking digital stills at full 16Mp resolution
