Canon EOS 7D digital SLR camera

Canon EOS 7D digital SLR cameraCanon has announced a brand-new high-end digital SLR camera, the EOS 7D. The 18Mp camera uses a DIGIC4 processor and has a top ISO setting of 12,800. It will go onsale later this month for £1,999.

Most digital cameras have ISO ratings of up to 3200. The 7D's ISO dial on the top right of the camera body goes up to 6400 but the ISO setting is expandable to 12,800 by invoking the camera's custom menus.

The new digital SLR model is designed as a replacement for the popular EOS 5D and sits below the popular Canon EOS 5D Mark II model in Canon's semi-professional camera range. The EOS 7D is also capable of shooting up to 8 RAW frames per second continuously or 128 Jpeg images.

The camera has 19 separate autofocus points. Images can be previewed on the Canon's 3in transmissive LCD Intelligent Viewfinder with a 160-degree viewing angle. Canon says the EOS 7D is also the first EOS to introduce a Dual-Axis Electronic Level. This features in both the viewfinder and on the LCD and indicates roll as well as pitch angles. It's intended to help the user shoot a level horizon when photography a landscape, for example. It can also be used in conjunction with a Tilt and Shift lens to level the camera.

The Canon EOS 7D sports an integrated flash that can be set to automatic or manually triggered. The camera itself has a startup of time around 0.2 seconds and is able to shoot full HD video at 1,920x1,080 resolution and 30 frames per second. Previous Canon dSLRs could shoot high-definition video at 24 or 25fps, but not 30fps. Canon says the additional frame rate option was added as a result of customer feedback.

Canon says that in designing the EOS 7D "we consulted over 5,000 photographers worldwide and asked them what they most wanted to see from a camera.

"Matching this insight with cutting-edge technology, we were able to develop a camera that truly gives photographers the versatile tool they require to experiment with their images."

Other notable designs tweaks including a more rugged chassis with improvement waterproofing.

The Canon EOS 7D will go onsale at the end of September for £1,999 for the camera body only, while pricing for the camera with an EF 28-135mm lens kit will be around £200 more. The EOS 7D will be compatible with a wireless transmitter and battery pack that will go onsale in November and will allow images to be sent back to a press room or network for immediate processing and uploading.

Full specifications of the Canon EOS 7D can be found on Canon's EOS 7D web page.
