Eye-Fi 2GB SD Card Wi-Fi camera adaptor

Digital cameras can now go wireless for £50 thanks to the launch of the Eye-Fi removable media card.

Wireless functionality has already found its way on to high-end digital SLR cameras, enabling in-the-field sports and news journalists to wire images back to the newsdesk for immediate publication.

Now, Wi-Fi is being offered as an option for consumers keen to get online and immediately post photos of where they are and what they've seen.

Aimed at the blogger generation, the Eye-Fi wireless memory card slips in to the SD Card slot on a digital camera. It offers 802.11b and 802.11g wireless connectivity and should also work with products that work with draft versions of the yet-to-be-ratified 802.11n standard.

Websites such as Flickr and Facebook are great for sharing your digital photos with your friends, but it can be a hassle, copying photos off your camera to a PC, reviewing and editing them, then uploading them to a website. The Eye-Fi wireless memory card should make things more straightforward.

The Secure Digital card can hold up to 2GB-worth of photos that can then be wirelessly transferred to a network or uploaded to a photo-sharing or blogging website. When in range of the user's home network pictures are automatically transferred to it from the camera. The Eye-Fi's built-in software resizes photos if limited by the destination photo-sharing or social networking site.

Bundled with Eye-Fi manager software and a USB memory card reader, the 2GB memory card costs $99 (£50). A UK distributor is set to be announced in the next few weeks.
