Toshiba has launched a £70 "palm-sized" external hard drive it hopes will catch the imagination of Christmas shoppers. The 400GB portable hard drive can hold around 114,000 digital photos or 177 hours of DVD quality video and has a USB 2.0 interface.
Weighing just 155g and measuring 81x127x17mm, the glossy black unit has glowing blue stripes. "External hard drives are becoming more like mobile phones - not necessarily a fashion accessory, but certainly a style statement", said Martin Larsson, vice-president and general manager of Toshiba Europe's storage device division.
For those who have bought into high-definition entertainment, the 400GB hard drive can store up to 47 hours of HD footage, while music fans can load up the device with 105,000 MP3 music files.
The USB 2.0 drive has a rubberised underside to help it withstand the odd knock and to help prevent it being bruished off a desk or other surface. An internal antishock mechanism helps prevent data loss.
The Toshiba 400GB USB 2.0 portable external hard drive is priced at €139.95 (£70)
