Graphics card company HIS has unveiled a silent version of its Radeon 5550 graphics card. The HIS Radeon HD 5550 Silence has 1GB of DDR2 graphics memory and supports the DirectX 11 gaming standard.
Also on offer are Full HD 1080p capabilities and ATI Stream technology. It's the only card in the 5550 range that comes with silent passive cooling heatsinks rather than noisy fans. HIS says the card is intended for use in Windows Media Center PCs. While some operational noise is expected and acceptable for general purpose computers, one that is likely to be sited in a living room and used for home entertainment needs to be exceptionally quiet.
The HIS Radeon HD 5550 draws a relatively modest 45 Watts of power even when being tasked with the most demanding games or with showing off high-definition Blu-ray video content.
Geared up to work seamlessly with Windows 7, the 1GB card offers drag-and-drop transcoding. It comes with both ATX and low profile brackets and can be fitted in a shallow media centre PC chassis and in full-height or half-height PCI-Express slots.
