PLDS iHOS104 Blu-ray writer

PLDS - the alliance of Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions - has unveiled the iHOS104 - a 4x internal Blu-ray drive that can read and write Blu-ray discs as well as standard CDs and DVDs.

The £77 drive has a SATA interface and comes bundled with Cyberlink Power DVD software to offer movie-quality playback of Blu-ray DVDs. The Cyberlink software also features TrueTheatre Motion technology that will upscale playback to 60fps (frames per second) and TrueTheatre Lighting that will enhance images details and natural colours.

The PLDS iHOS104 can burn single and double layer Blu-ray discs at a speed of 4x, while single layer DVD+/-R are burnt at 12x and double layer DVD+/-R at 8x. The device will also burn single layer DVD+/- RW at 8x and CD-R and RW at 32x

"Slowly but surely the Blu-ray Disc format is growing in popularity. By reducing the end-user price of a Blu-ray Disc playback device for PCs, Lite-On facilitates consumers who want to upgrade their system to enjoy high definition content playback on their PC from a Blu-ray Disc, without making a high investment", says Jelmer Veldman, marketing manager for Lite-On in Europe.

Priced at £77, the iHOS104 will be available from PLDS from July.
