Western Digital CaviarGreen 2TB hard drive

Western Digital has launched the first ever single-platter 2TB (two terabyte) hard drive. The CaviarGreen internal hard disk is described by WD as "environmentally friendly, cool and quiet".

The 2TB SATA (serial ATA) drive is based on Western Digital's 500GB per platter technology and has a 32MB onboard cache memory. The 3.5in drive could be used in a similar fashion to WD's existing CaviarGreen product line, making its way into external USB, FireWire and eSATA drives as well as RAID arrays and being used as an internal hard disk.

Western Digital says it decided to go ahead with producing a 2TB hard drive because of the unexpectedly strong take-up of 1TB drives. "Some 10 percent of 3.5in hard drive sales are at the 1 TB level or higher, serving demand from video applications and expanding consumer media libraries," said Mark Geenen, president of analyst company Trend Focus. "The 2 TB hard drives will continue to satisfy end users' insatiable desire to store more data on ever larger hard drives."

The €299 drive will be onsale in the UK and elsewhere in Europe later this week.
