There are three main operating systems in the smartphone world with iOS, Android and Windows Phone (soon to be simply Windows 10), so it's perhaps not too surprising that BlackBerry is rumoured to be making an Android-powered smartphone. Here's what we know about the BlackBerry Android phone so far including release date, price and specs. Read: best smartphones in the UK 2015.

The smartphone market is a tough place and even big names like HTC and Sony are struggling. BlackBerry has been around for a long time and although there was a brief period where it was cool to own one as a teenager, those days are long gone. It's still fairly common to see commuters with a BlackBerry but how many of them have a second phone? Well BlackBerry might be planning to bounce back with two new devices, codenamed 'Prague' and 'Venice', which runs on Google's popular Android OS.

BlackBerry Android phone release date and price

Via leaked information from N4BB, the supposed BlackBerry smartphone running Android will be launched in August. When in the summery month is unclear but we'll keep you updated should the firm send out any invites to a press event or there is more detailed information from the rumour mill.

This is the 'Prague' model with the 'Venice' supposedly arriving in November.

With rumoured low-end specs (see below), we can only assume that the price will be too so it will compete against devices like the Moto E and mobile network phones like the Vodafone Smart Prime 6 and EE Harrier.

BlackBerry Android phone specs and features

You might think that BlackBerry would want to fight the big guns like the iPhone 6, LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 with high end premium specs but the BlackBerry Prague is supposedly a low-end phone.

It will have a form factor similar to the BlackBerry Z3 with no physical keyboard. The Z3 has a 5in 540 x 960 display, dual-core processor and a 5Mp camera.

The BlackBerry Venice, on the other hand, looks like it will offer more premium specs including a 5.4in Quad HD display, a Snapdragon 808 CPU and 3GB of RAM. It's also rumoured to have an 18Mp rear camera and a 5Mp front camera.

The Venice will be a 'slider' meaning it will feature a slide-out physical keyboard. It was shown off at MWC 2015 but nothing more than a glimpse of it (see main image).
