Asus has started selling its AiGuru SV1T touch-enabled videophone in the UK. Described by its maker as a "next-generation videophone", it allows users to make free or low-cost telephone calls using Skype.
The Wi-Fi-enabled handset sports a 7in touchscreen display and combines the functions of a webcam with a phone. The videophone is icon-heavy and is designed to be easy to use even for consumers who have never used a webcam or a computer before.
The handset can be used both outdoors and in and does not need to be attached to a PC or for any software to be installed prior to use. Both Skype-to-landline and Skype-to-Skype calls can be made on the phone, with unlimited voice and video calls available over the Skype broadband phone service.
Asussays calls can be received from Skype users who don't own a videophone, meaning PC-based Skype users or those using a landline telephone within a Wi-Fi area. A Skype number needs to be available in this case.
The £199 Asus Videophone Touch AiGuru SV1T is available immediately from Expansys and other web stores.
