New HTC One M8 2014 Duo Camera video demo: new HTC one camera tests

We take a look at the Duo Camera feature of the new HTC One M8 flagship smartphone.

So the HTC One M8 smartphone is official and one of its main selling points is the Duo Camera so we've taken a closer look at it in our latest video.

The Duo Camera is arguably the HTC One M8's biggest and most interesting feature and one which needs a bit of explanation. As you can see from the back of the smartphone, the M8 has not one, but two camera lenses.

They're not for taking 3D photos though so here's the deal. The bottom camera is the same Ultrapixel camera which HTC introduced with the original HTC One, the M7. It's got a backside illuminated (BSI) sensor, a pixel size of 2µm, a sensor size of 1/3in with f/2.0 and a 28mm lens.

Meanwhile the second camera, near the top of the device, captures depth information and it does this for still only, not video. The information it gathers is attached to the photograph as metadata and means you can do some interesting things afterwards. With the help of the HTC ImageChip 2, the Duo Camera allows a user to refocus a photo after it has been taken – much like the Lytro camera. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy S5 which lets users select different focal points, the HTC One M8 allows for infinite refocus. Using an app built into the camera called Foreground, users can select a new area of an image to focus on. It can also add effects and other feature is the ability to cut and paste items from one photo to another.

Check it out in action in the video above.
