Samsung has introduced its Galaxy Xcover 2 smartphone.

Samsung said the Galaxy Xcover 2 is: "the ideal smartphone for active explorers who are enjoying outdoor lifestyles and seeking a durable mobile device with essential smartphone capabilities."

To this end it has a rugged design which is dust, sand and water proof meeting the IP67 certification. Since the Galaxy Xcover 2 can survive being in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, users can take underwater photos with the direct camera key. There's also a strap and a lock to hold the battery cover on.

Main specifications include a 1GHz dual-core processor, 4in touchscreen with a 480x800 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a 5Mp camera. There's also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

The Galaxy Xcover 2 will ship with Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system but there's no word on when the smartphone will ship, or how much it will cost.

Samsung said the Xcover 2 benefits from a Motion UI which means users can 'shake to update' and 'turn over to mute'. The phone also has features found on the Galaxy S3 including S-Cloud, S Voice, Best Shot and Smart Stay.

Those who like hiking and keeping fit will enjoy pre-downloaded Google Maps data combined with 'enhanced' GPS and the Cardio Trainer Pro app. The firm claims the 1700mAh battery means the Galaxy Xcover 2 will last for 570 hours.
