Galaxy Grand is mid-range smartphone with 5in screen and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
Samsung has announced its Galaxy Grand, a 5in Android Jelly Bean smartphone.
It's a strange time to announce a smartphone, close to Christmas and pre-CES, but Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Grand. The 5in handset will launch with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean but the firm hasn't announced when. See also: Samsung Galaxy S4 release date, specs and rumours.
Samsung described the Galaxy Grand as: "an ideal smartphone for users with fast-paced mobile lifestyles who demand more from their phone."
The Galaxy Grand will launch in a dual-SIM version (GT-I9082) first, while a single-SIM model (GT-I9080) will follow. As well as any release dates, Samsung hasn't given any pricing so we'll update you when we hear.
Sitting between the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 in size, the 5in Galaxy Grand is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and has a resolution of just 480 x 800. Other specifications include 8GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM and a microSD card slot. Read Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3 could have flexible displays.
Cameras consist of an 8Mp rear facing camera which can shoot video in full HD 1080p and a 2Mp front facing camera which will do video up to 720p. See also: Group test: What's the best smartphone?
"Even with the large screen, the phone is still slim, ergonomic and comfortable to hold." said Samsung. The Galaxy Grand is 9mm thick and weighs 162g.
The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system will come with features found on handsets like the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy Grand will offer Samsung software including Direct Call, S Voice, Smart Alert, Popup Video and AllShare Play. Users will also be able to access the Samsung Hub.
