Sony announces Xperia E smartphone

A budget Android 4.1 Jelly Bean smartphone

Sony Xperia E smartphone

Sony has announced the Xperia E, a 'no-nonsense' budget Android smartphone.

Sony's 'affordable' Xperia E will launch in the first quarter of 2013 running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It will also come in a dual-SIM version called the Xperia E Dual. Group test: what's the best Android phone?

Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia marketing at Sony, said: "Consumers looking to take their first steps into the world of Xperia smartphones would be well advised to look at Xperia E or Xperia E dual. They are perfect for those seeking affordable access to the quality and functionality more traditionally associated with high-end Android smartphones,"

Best place to buy a smartphone

Despite describing the Xperia E as both 'competitively priced' and 'affordable', Sony hasn't actually given a price tag for the handset. We'll update this as soon as we find out. See also: Sony Xperia U review.

The Xperia E features a 3.5in (320x480) screen, 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a 3.2Mp rear facing camera. Sony said it also has HD Voice and power management which extends the standby time by four times. See also: Sony Xperia phones get Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Sony's Xperia E will be available in black, white and pink while the Xperia E Dual will come in black or gold.
