Will take on Nokia's Lumia 820 and Lumia 920

Windows Phone 8X by HTC

HTC has announced two Windows Phone 8 smartphones in the form of the 8X and 8S.

The oddly named Windows Phone 8X by HTC and the Windows Phone 8S by HTC are the firm's first smartphones to run on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system. They will be released on 15 November and can be pre-ordered from £224, according to Unlocked Mobiles. Group test: What's the best smartphone?

Peter Chou, CEO of HTC said: "We’ve been inspired by Windows Phone 8 to create new smartphones that give the platform the iconic design and personality it deserves. Windows Phone has clearly emerged as one of the top mobile ecosystems and is competitive against any other smartphone platform in the world."

The 8X is the largest of the pair with a 4.3in (720 x 1280) display and had an 8Mp camera, 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of internal storage. Its pre-order price at Unlocked Mobiles is £398. Visit Windows Phone 8 release date and specs.

A 4in (480 x 800) screen, 1GHz dual-core processor and 5Mp camera are the highlights of the cheaper 8S.It only has 4GB of internal storage but offers a microSD card slot for expansion.

Both handsets come with Beats Audio and are 'perfectly sculpted with a dramatic taper making them feel thin in the hand'. The pair will rival Nokia's Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 as well as Samsung's Ativ S.

Both handsets will be available in a range of colours from: Three, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2, Virgin Media, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4u, Brightpoint and Brightstar Tech Data.
