Samsung announces i550, i560 and i780 smartphones

Samsung today announced three smartphones for the UK. The Samsung i550, Samsung i560 and Samsung i780 are aimed at tech-savvy, media loving consumers, or business folk who just wanna have fun.

The Samsung i550 and Samsung i560 use Symbian’s S60 smartphone software. Available early next year on the O2 network, the i550 is pitched squarely at mobile web junkies. It has a 2.6in colour screen and 128MB of RAM, as well as the s60 web browser, trackball navigation and swift HSDPA connectivity. You also get a 3Mp camera, video recorder and S-GPS/A-GPS navigation.

If you can't wait for the Samsung i550, the Samsung i560 will be available next month on Vodaphone. Described by Samsung as a 'stylish slider', the i560 also offers HSDPA high-speed web browsing and has its own 2.4in colour screen. As well as the 3Mp camera with flash, the Samsung i560 offers an FM radio and GPS navigation.

For the more business-focused individual, Samsung would like to present: the Samsung i780. Not shy of hyperbole, Samsung describes the Samsung i780 as: 'the ultimate ultra slim smartphone designed for the on-the-go busy professional'. Which is quite a claim, but the specs do seem to stack up.

Using Windows Pocket PC software, the Samsung i780 enjoys HSDPA connectivity and is Wi-Fi-enabled. It has a 2.55in colour screen and, like the others, it boasts GPS-navigation capabilities. Intriguingly you also get an optical mouse, as well as Google, IM and VoIP applications. There's a 2Mp camera and an RSS/podcast-management tool too. All of which might lead you to expect a brick, but the Samsung i780 is - in Samsung's own words - 'unbelievably thin', measuring only 12.8mm. The Samsung i780 will be available from the end of November 2007 on the Orange network.
