Dell has a new range of Windows 10 laptops, plus a new hybrid for those who want a laptop and tablet in one. Here’s the Dell XPS 12, 13 and 15 release date, price and specifications

Earlier this year, Dell launched a revamped XPS 13 which – as we said in our review – made Windows laptops sexy again. Now the same treatment has been given to the XPS 15, which thanks to the InfinityEdge display, is the world’s smallest 15in laptop.

There’s also a refreshed XPS 13 and a new XPS 12: a 4K tablet with a magnetically attached keyboard. Just like the Microsoft Surface Book.

Dell XPS 15: release date, price and specs

If a 13in laptop is too small for you, the new XPS 15 should appeal. It too has the Infinity Edge display which has extremely thin bezels (5.7mm), such that the screen appears to run from edge to edge. This makes it the smallest 15-inch laptop around, closer in dimensions to most 14-inch laptops.

The glossy screen has a 4K (3840x2160) resolution and is the only laptop display to have a gamut that covers 100 percent of the Adobe RGB standard. That means colours are accurate for editing photos and video, and it also looks stunning (we’ve spent a short while playing with the whole new range).

It’s also a touchscreen, but if you prefer a matt finish to avoid glare, there’s a full HD option which isn’t a touchscreen.

The chassis is svelte and measures 11-17mm, and weighs a fraction under 1.8kg ) for the non-touch model.

Various SKUs are available offering a choice of 6th-gen Core processors (Skylake), nVidia GTX 960M graphics, and up to 32GB RAM, 1TB of hard drive or SSD storage.

There’s a Thunderbolt 3 connector which is also a USB-C port for fast storage and charging. Plus, you get a handy button to check the battery level via five white LEDs:

If you opt for a traditional hard drive you’ll also get shorter runtime on battery as there’s room only for a 56Wh battery. But go for an SSD and you get 84Wh. Dell says the non-touch HD i7 version is good for 17 hours of web browsing over Wi-Fi, but only 10 if you have the 4K touchscreen with the i7.

It’s a great-looking laptop that’s a serious rival for the MacBook Pro.

You can order one immediately on Dell’s website, and prices start from £1099 inc VAT.

Dell XPS 13: release date, price and specs

The XPS 13 is also available to order immediately, with prices starting from £849. As we’ve said, it’s a refresh, not a redesign, so you won’t be able to tell the new model apart from the old.

What’s new? Well, the sixth-generation Core processors are now available, and there’s Thunderbolt 3. You can also specify up to 1TB of SSD storage and 16GB of RAM, just as with the new XPS 15.

The form factor is unchanged yet remains very impressive. The tiny bezels mean this is still the smallest 13-inch laptop around, the size of most 11-inch models. The carbon fibre deck helps to keep weight low at just 1.2kg.

Dell XPS 12: release date, price and specs

Dell hasn't yet annouced a release date for the XPS 12, saying only that it will be available (along with UK pricing) in "the coming months". We expect it to appear on Dell's UK website within weeks, though. Models start at $999 for the HD display, 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. This could turn into £849 in the UK, but we can't say for sure yet. If you want 4K and 256GB of storage, expect to pay $300 more.

Dell XPS 12 13 15: release date, price and specs

The XPS 12 isn't Dell's first 2-in-1 but it's the first to combine a 12.5in tablet with a laptop-style keyboard which attaches magnetically, making it possible to detach the tablet with one hand. Thanks to the Continuum feature in Windows 10, it can automatically switch between tablet and desktop modes when you dock and undock the tablet.

The tablet has a 4K screen, making it the first 2-in-1 to have a 4K display. The Surface Book has a lower 3000x2000 resolution on a one-inch-larger 13.5in screen. If you don't want a 4K display, you can opt for a 1920x1080 version which will be cheaper.

Dell calls the keyboard a Mobility Base, and it comes included with all XPS 12 models: it's not an optional extra. The keybard - like the XPS 13 and 15 - is backlit - and has full-size keys for easy touch-typing. There's also a big buttonless touchpad which is only a little smaller than the XPS 13's.

Magnets are also used to keep the keyboard attached in the closed position, but the 'hinge' which is just a curved receptical for the tablet doesn't allow different viewing angles. When you open the screen it sits back at around 120 degrees and it can be a problem to avoid glare and reflections.

There are two USB-C ports on the tablet so you can charge and use other peripherals at the same time. Plus, there's an adaptor to regular USB in the box. A pen stylus will be an optional extra.

It uses the latest Core M processor from the Skylake range, a chip whose performance we haven't yet tested out.
