Lenovo outs first 15in ThinkPad Ultrabook laptop

Ultrabook appears to float but comes with Ivy Bridge not Haswell

Lenovo has announced its ThinkPad S531, the firm's first 15in ThinkPad Ultrabook laptop.

The ThinkPad S531 laptop has been introduced at London Fashion Week because of the Ultrabook's "elegant floating design", according to Lenovo. An ultra-thin bezel and bevelled edges give the illusion that the PC is floating.

It has a smooth sand blasted and anodised aluminium cover, available in 'fashion-forward silver' or 'graphite black'. See also: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch touchscreen Ultrabook review.

"We pack a punch behind that style, however, as we are committed to delivering genuine substance with improved performance, battery life and legendary ThinkPad reliability," said Vincent Fauquenot, VP of products and channels at Lenovo. "The ThinkPad S531 offers an intuitive Windows 8 experience with the power needed to accelerate productivity."

If you were expecting a Haswell processor then it's bad news as the Ultrabook has an Intel Ivy Bridge chip, but Lenovo says it's 15 percent faster than its predecessor. The ThinkPad S531 offers up to nine hours of battery life and comes with Windows 8.

Lenovo said there are different display configurations available including Full HD 1080p resolution and a 180-degree 'open angle' hinge. Other specifications include 10GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. See also Group test: what's the best ultrabook laptop?

The S531 is one of the first ThinkPad laptops to feature Lenovo's OneLink technology. It allows users to connect to a ThinkPad OneLink Dock with one cable for dedicated video, additional USB 3.0 ports and gigabit Ethernet.

Prices for the Ultrabook laptop start at £575 (exc VAT) and Lenovo warns that the configuration available may vary depending on country.
