Google announces Chromebook Pixel

Google takes on Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina display

Google Chromebook Pixel

Google has announced is Chromebook Pixel laptop. Read our Chromebook Pixel review.

The latest laptop to run Google's Chrome OS is the Chromebook Pixel. The web-centric device is available to pre-order from the Play Store for £1,049 and will start shipping next week. See all laptop reviews.

Google said the Pixel: "brings together the best in hardware, software and design to inspire the next generation of Chromebooks. With the Pixel, we set out to rethink all elements of a computer in order to design the best laptop possible, especially for power users who have fully embraced the cloud."

Chromebooks from Google's partners including Acer, Samsung, HP and Lenovo have all come with budget price tags around the £200 mark. The Chromebook Pixel suddenly takes the category into the premium market.

The main reason for its steep asking price is the 12.85in touchscreen covered in Gorilla Glass. It has a resolution of 2560 x 1700 meaning a total of 4.3 million pixels and a density of 239ppi.

That's a pixel density even higher than Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina display – 227ppi for the 13in model.

"With a screen this rich and engaging, you want to reach out and touch it—so we added touch for a more immersive experience. Touch makes it simple and intuitive to do things like organize tabs, swipe through apps and edit photos with the tip of your finger." added Google.

The Chromebook Pixel is powered by a 1.8GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 32GB solid state drive (SSD). For three years there's also 1TB of Google Drive cloud storage space.

Other key specifications include a machined aluminium body, two USB 2.0 ports, an HD webcam and a touted five hours of battery life. The Chromebook Pixel is 16.2mm thick and weighs 1.5kg.
