Sony updates Vaio S laptops with Ivy Bridge

Also unveils bigger Vaio E models but without Ivy Bridge

Sony has refreshed its Vaio S notebooks with Intel's Ivy Bridge processors.

The latest Vaio S models are available in 13.3-inch and 15.5-inch screen sizes. Inside the magnesium, aluminium and carbon fibre or shell is a third generation Intel Ivy Bridge processor – a Core i7-3612QM for the larger of the two.

Sony said: "There’s no need to compromise on power or mobility thanks to the speedy new VAIO S Series notebook PC from Sony. Offering an appealing blend of power and portability, the new VAIO S Series can handle the demands of the toughest working day."

The laptops weigh in at less than 2kg and include a slot-in optical drive, optional SSD and Nvidia GeForce graphics. Other optional technology includes a docking station and a sheet battery to extend battery life to 14 hours.

Sony has also unveiled new models of the Vaio E series after announcing the Vaio E Series 14 last month. This is now joined by 15.5-inch and 17.3-inch models with the same ‘wrap-around’ design.

Unfortunately the E-Series will not be graced with Ivy Bridge chips but a second generation Core i5 instead.

Sony's 2012 range of Vaio laptops, including the Vaio T Ultrabooks, are due to arrive next month. We'll be able to update you on specific pricing closer to the launch.
