Samsung 500GB laptop drive to debut in March

Samsung Electronics has revealed that it is building a 500GB notebook hard drive that will ship in March.

The new 2.5-inch Spinpoint M6 hard disk drive will feature three 166GB platters and measure 9.5 millimeters in height, said Samsung. By installing two Spinpoint M6 drives onto a notebook PC, up to 1TB of available storage capacity will be available to users, noted Samsung officials.

The Spinpoint M6 drive was unveiled late Sunday at the International Consumer Electronics Show show in Las Vegas. Pricing details were not disclosed.

News of the new 500GB notebook hard drive arrives just days after rival Hitachi disclosed that it will begin shipping its new Travelstar 5K500 2.5-inch 500GB spinning disk drive in February.

The new Samsung drive features Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology and spins at up to 5400 rpm spindle speeds and has 8MB buffer cache. The device includes a 3Gbit/sec SATA interface. Free fall and rotational vibrational sensors are available as add-ons to the drive, the company said.

Samsung said the 500GB Spinpoint M6 can store up to 160,000 digital images, 125 hours of non-HD DVD movies or 60 hours of high-definition videos. The manufacturer said its new storage hardware device will be targeted at notebook computers, blade servers and high density mobile applications.
