Some will consider it a Christmas miracle that Activision and Vicarious Visions have confirmed the PS One classics will be released on PS4 (not Xbox One) giving players a suitable hit of retro gaming joy. It was first announced at E3 2016 but with no details - part of the trend of releasing old games with devices such as the NES Classic mini from Nintendo.

When is the Crash Bandicoot PS4 release date?

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy UK release date: 30 June 2017

The remastered Crash Bandicoot trilogy will arrive on the PlayStation 4 on 30 June 2017.

How much will Crash Bandicoot for PS4 cost in the UK?

You can pre-order Crash Bandicoot for PS4 from a few different online stores. The best price at the time of writing is Zavvi for £32.99, while ShopTo lists it at £33.85. You can also pay slightly more to grab it from Amazon for £34.99 with the usual pre-order price guarantee, or quite a lot more to grab it from Game for £49.99 - but we expect that price to drop in line with everyone else pretty quickly!

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane trilogy games

The new remastered collection will include the following Crash Bandicoot games:

•    Crash Bandicoot
•    Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
•    Crash Bandicoot: Warped

Is it remastered?

Developer Vicarious Visions says it's hard to answer whether Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a 'remaster' or a remake'.

It said: "It's practically impossible to make a traditional remaster of the original Naughty Dog games. They're roughly 20 years old, and technology has advanced significantly in that time. The original code and assets are nearly unusable. Nearly."

"But we don't consider this a remake. We know how much you all love the original games, so we didn't want to fully remake them. The N. Sane Trilogy is a remaster plus."

Gameplay and new features

Vicarious Visions has quite a task taking these classic games from Naughty Dog and rebuilding them, saying it started by simply playing them to understand fully what was needed. The firm has used the original level geometry as a guide but completely rebuilt the Crash Bandicoot gameplay adding its own 'lush and zany art, animation, and audio'.

Levels aside, it confirmed that characters will be rebuilt following original designs and there will also be rebuilt cinematics inspired by the originals, while the music has been re-recorded too.

That said, Crash Bandicoot PS4 won't be simply identical but with modern graphics. Vicarious Visions has detailed new features which will be added to the game with consideration for the team's ideas, fan requests and the evolution of the franchise.

"The first new features we’ve worked on take the best of each of the games and apply them to all three," said the developer and include the following.

•    A unified checkpoint & save game system - includes manual and auto-saving
•    Unified menu system
•    Time Trials in all three games
