Nintendo announces 3DS XL console

Nintendo super-sizes the 3DS to XL

Nintendo has announced the 3DS XL handheld gaming console.

The new version of the 3DS has a screen 90 percent larger than the current model. At 4.88in it's the biggest screen Nintendo has ever put on a handheld console. It is scheduled to launch in Europe on 28 July.

Nintendo 3DS XL

Nintendo said: "the new system will create even more immersive entertainment experiences for users, delivering a wealth of games and video content that can be enjoyed on the go."

The bottom screen is also larger than the original 3DS at 4.18in. Nintendo will bundle the 3DS XL with a 4GB SD card for storage. The firm is expecting existing DS owners to purchase the 3DS XL as it won’t be including an AC power adapter.

The 3DS XL will be available in silver, red or blue with black trim. Despite the increased screen real estate the console boasts longer battery life than the 3DS of up to 10 hours.

Nintendo has promised a 'reasonable purchase price' for the 3DS XL. It will launch alongside games such as New Art Academy and Freakyforms Deluxe Your Creations, Alive!
