LG launched one of the first Android Wear smartwatches and is now back with a new model called the G Watch R with a round screen to rival the Moto 360Read: The best smartwatches of 2014.

At £225 the G Watch R is a little bit more expensive than its key rival from Motorola and is the most costly Android Wear smartwatch you can buy. See also: What is Google Android Wear?

If you can afford it, then this is one of the best looking smarwatches on the market – regardless of operating system. It looks more like a real watch than any other and even with the screen on can fool you into thinking the hands are physical.

It comes with good looking stainless steel body and a leather strap and is surprisingly thinner than the Moto 360.  Like many smartwatches, it's dust and waterproof to a rating of IP67.

The only real downside to the G Watch R's design is the size. It's pretty big so won't be ideal for anyone with a smaller wrist.

We're seeing almost identical specs across all the Android Wear smartwatches with a few little differences here and there. Here is a Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage.

There's the usual array of sensors including a gyro, compass, accelerometer but LG also adds a heart rate monitor and baromemter. Unfortunately, the former often takes a while to provide a reading.

A battery size of 410 mAh is pretty typical and we got 3-4 days from the watch between charges which is better than the Moto 360 – partly because the heart rate monitor only takes a reading on demand.

It doesn't have wireless charging like its rival, though, instead offering a more basic magnetic dock.

One of the main reasons to opt for the G Watch R is its round P-OLED screen doesn't have the bottom part of the screen annoyingly cut off like the Moto 360. Watch our video: How to set up a Google Wear smartwatch to see how the companion app works.

With Android Wear, the experience is extremely similar to rival smartwatches - although LG does provide a great selection of watchfaces to choose from out of the box.

The LG G Watch R might be the most expensive Android Wear smartwatch you can buy but it's the best we've seen. It adds bundles of style compared to the firm's first effort and will convince most people it's a regular watch. It just nips the Moto 360 with its fully round screen and better battery life.
