The iriver WiFi Story EB03 is being sold through WHSmith and draws on the high-street chain’s extensive list of publications, from blockbuster movie tie-ins to novels and celebrity autobiographies. The inclusion of 802.11b/g wireless connectivity allows for on-the-fly book downloads.
The iriver WiFi Story is 10mm thick and takes up only 292g of your luggage allowance. It has a 2GB internal memory, a 6in mono screen with 16 levels of grey and a resolution of 600x800 pixels. The e-book reader runs a customised version of the Linux operating system known as iriver Flow. iriver says the interface offers fast page reorientation from landscape to portrait and back and fast page refreshes. A common complaint about e-book readers to date has been that the battery may last forever but it also takes an age for a page to be refreshed.
A comic book viewer has been added to the existing Story e-book reader’s ability to reader Word and Excel documents, PDFs, ePUB and .txt files. The new model can render Jpeg, GIF, PNG and bitmap images and also supports the DJVU and FB2 commercial e-publishing formats.
The iriver WiFi Story has its own keyboard (so owner’s can tap in details of books they want to buy and annotate pages of publications they’ve bought). The 2GB memory can be supplemented by inserting an SD Card up to 32GB.
