TomTom GO 930T satnav device

TomTom is launching a replacement to its GO 920T satnav device. The TomTom GO 930T will launch at the end of April. It will be a 4.3in touch-sensitive widescreen device.

The TomTom GO 930T physically resembles its predecessor but offers a new approach to working out the fastest route between two locations.

The TomTom 930T calculates the best route for the driver based on average speeds for each road. TomTom says its IQ Routes technology results in its satellite navigation devices offering the “smartest route calculation on the market today”.

Rather than using speed limits for each road type the route covers, TomTom’s IQ Routes software looks at average driving speeds. This, the satellite navigation company claims, results in the device suggesting a different but faster route more than half the time. The company points out that this reduces fuel consumption as well as saving time.

Another feature of the TomTom GO 930T is its Advanced Lane Guidance. This is intended to provide a more realistic view of the road and make it clearer which lane the driver needs to move into in order to safely negotiate roundabouts or exit one motorway and segue on to another.

Commenting on the implementation of the IQ Routes feature of the TomTom GO 930T, Harold Goddijn, TomTom’s chief executive officer, said “Everyone knows that traffic on a Sunday is different to traffic on a Monday. IQ Routes delivers what we call ‘intelligent routing’ – an even smarter and efficient way of planning your daily route.”

Primed with maps of 35 European countries plus the US, Russia and Canada, the 930T will go onsale in the UK and Ireland from the end of April. Pricing has yet to be announced.

It will come with MapShare software with which owners can submit their own updates to routes that have been temporarily or permanently altered, enabling TomTom to provide navigation details that are always up to date.
