Chinese consumer electronics maker Venturer is set to sell a standalone HD-DVD player offering 1080p high-definition video playback – undercutting the £200 Toshiba HD-DVD player announced in September.

While a grey box in your living room may not be cause for huge excitement, the fact that this Venturer DVD player supports high-definition video, undercuts even Toshiba’s low-cost standalone model and has an Ethernet port for sending HD content around your home may pique your interest. It upscales rather than natively supports 1080p, but should pave the way for a rash of cheaper HD players in 2008.
