External hard drive maker Iomega has launched a 160GB Xbox and PS3 console media storage. The Iomega Media Xporter USB 2.0 external backup drive costs £73 in the UK.
The 2.5in Iomega Media Xporter external hard disk drive enables games console fans to easily and conveniently port their photos, videos and other multimedia items from a PC and display it on the screen they use for gaming.
According to Iomega, the Media Xporter Drive “includes software to convert most kinds of video formats for use with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3”. Two of the three USB 2.0 ports on the Xbox 360 or two of the four USB 2.0 ports on the PS3 are needed to power the Iomega Media Xporter.
The drive offers native support for common formats such as Mp3, Mpeg4 and Jpeg and photos, music and videos of these type can be played on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with no conversion necessary. However, Iomega also supplies video conversion software with the Media Xporter that can be used to convert additional video file formats into compatible game console formats.
Prism Video Converter MX software can be downloaded for free and will convert input files in formats such as QuickTime, AVI, VOB and others, into Mpeg4 files that are recognised by the games consoles.
Iomega envisages the drive being used to run an entire media library and be the family video and photo viewer. It can also import music playlists. Says a spokesman, “The Iomega Media Xporter Drive makes home entertainment accessible and portable in a way that’s fresh and relevant for today’s home gamer.”
The Iomega Media Xporter Drive can store up to 640,000 (highly compressed 3Mp) photos or more than 2,900 hours of music or 240 hours of video.
Designed for use with XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 games consoles, the Iomega Media Xporter Drive USB 2.0, 160GB is also compatible with Apple’s Mac OS X 10.1 and above as well as with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Me and 2000 Professional.
