Equinux Tizi iPad 2 TV tuner updated

Power and security improvements add to portable PVR appeal

The Apple iPad is a superb device on which to watch BBC iPlayer or YouTube videos. Nonetheless, there are a couple of TV tuners for iPad on the market now.

The Equinux tizi is compatible with the Mac TV app as well as the Apple iPad and iPad 2, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 and iPod touch. The tizi can be used on its own and send TV information over a home Wi-Fi network or plug in to a Mac via USB. The necessary Mac TV app is available as a free download from the iTunes Store.

Maker Eqiunux cites a battery life approximately 3 hours when used wirelessly. The 2.5oz unit has a retractable aerial and an LED battery status indicator, but is controlled via the device on which TV programmes are received. First launched in late March along with the Apple iPad 2, the £149 Tivi.tv can schedule recordings, pause and rewind programmes. It picks up DTT programming via GPS.

New to version 1.3 of the tivi software is a superzoom function that works in portrait mode, enhanced WPA2 encryption and the ability to preserve battery power and storage space with an auto-off feature that kicks in after a set period or once a scheduled recording is complete.

The Equinuz tizi costs £149 and can be bought via Apple resellers or tizi.tv
