Sony PlayTV personal video recorder

Sony PlayStation owners are set to get a new toy. Sony's PlayTV launches on 16 September and will add TV streaming capabilities to the monolithic games console.

Sony PlayTV is a separate TV tuner box that attaches to the PlayStation and turns it into a digital video recorder capable of recording TV programmes and storing them for future viewing. As well as recording programmes as they air, it will be able to pause or rewind programmes as they are broadcast - a process known as time-shifting.

However, there's no need for avid games players to interrupt their enjoyment of Grand Theft Auto or Metal Gear Solid IV - the PlayTV can be scheduled to record Pimp My Ride, Red Bull X-Fighters (or whatever else they'd otherwise miss) in the background.

In addition to being able to play recorded TV content stored on a PS3 console, programmes can be streamed over a home Wi-Fi network and viewed on a PlayStation Portable.

Access to recorded programmes and options to record programmes can be controlled via the PS3's Blu-ray remote control or the console's six-axis gamepad.

Sony PlayTV will cost £60 inc VAT.
