Asus has announced two new laptop ranges. Both the U and UX models are described as "light and light" and are designed for "both contemporary style and effortless computing". The keyboards sound distinctly 80s, however.

Asus is touting their 'chiclet' illuminated keyboards - a rubber keyboard akin to those found on old ZX Spectrum computers.

On the Asus U Series, you also get an illuminated touchpad. Asus says it has included backlit components to make it easier for users to type in the dark. A light sensor automatically dims or brightens the screen according to whether it's daylight or evening.

The basic specifications of the two new Asus laptop ranges are an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 512MB nVidia GeForce G 105M graphics and a hard disk of up to 500GB.

On the UX Series, portability is critical and Asus keeps the weight down by including a slot-loading optical drive rather than a DVD tray.

The U Series models, by contrast, appear to be geared up for entertainment duties, with a 15.6in LED backlit display complemented by Altec Lansing speakers and SRS surround sound.

More details as we get them.
