Sony VAIO L Series all-in-one PC

Sony VAIO L Series all-in-one PCSony has launched an all-in-one PC designed to take advantage of the touchscreen capabilities in the about-to-launch Windows 7 operating system.

The Sony VAIO L Series PC is a 24in flatscreen display that plays high-definition video and TV programmes and that conceals a powerful home computer. It comes in a choice of 32bit or 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sony says the L Series computer is the ideal device for enjoying and sharing digital content and to synchronise and store all the photos, video and other media files from laptops, netbooks, cameras and so on.

The VAIO L has an X-Black 1,920x,1080-pixel screen - designed to make onscreen images appear more intense and colourful. Users can physically flick through items stored in the Media Gallery, an application Sony has designed specifically for the fingertip-sensitive display.

Media Gallery supports gestures as well as simple finger presses. Users can browse their photos, albums and video collections in a variety of ways including by subject, folder or on a timeline of when they were created. Sony says the Media Gallery will learn user preferences about how they view and store photos and music and automatically display it accordingly the next time the program is launched.

Blu-ray films can be played on the more expensive version of the VAIO L Series machine, while high-definition video created by the user on a camcorder can be displayed and edited on both models.

The 32bit Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium machine has a 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 processor paired with 4GB of DDR2 RAM. It comes with VAIO Movie Story - video-editing software that automatically splices the best bits from several pieces of video footage and creates a video from them.

A similar application, SenseMe, organises music playlists by characteristics of the tracks to produce a particular mood.

Graphics are supported by 512GB nVidia GeForce G210M chip. On the 64bit version of the Sony VAIO L Series machine, this is twinned with a 3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor. A DVB-T digital TV tuner and a Blu-ray DVD player that supports both DVD+/- reading and recording formats also distinguishes the L11S1E/S model from the 32bit version.

The L Series goes onsale in the UK from 22 October, the day Microsoft launches its Windows 7 operating system worldwide.
