HP TouchSmart tx2

The HP TouchSmart tx2 convertible laptop is a little different from a run-of-the-mill tablet: it supports multi-touch.

This means you can not only control it and navigate its menu by sliding a finger across the screen; you can zoom in and out using a pinching gesture and flick through albums of photos or other media. If you've tried an iPhone, you'll recognise the routine. An alternative input method is to use the digital pen HP (aka stylus) supplies.

Key specifications of the tx2 include a 12.1in BrightView LED display, a 2.2GHz AMD Turion processor, 250GB hard disk, 4GB of RAM and a dual-layer DVD writer. It will also have 3 USB ports, a multi-format memory card reader and Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity.

The "capacitive touchscreen" HP TouchSmart tx2 went onsale in the US this week for an asking price of $1,119. It will hit the UK in January, but pricing has yet to be confirmed.

HP launched a family-oriented TouchSmart rugged desktop PC at the start of the year that also had a touchscreen display and that was designed for use in settings such as a kitchen where mucky hands may routinely end up operating it.
