nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card

Graphics card maker nVidia has today announced the availability of its 512MB GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card.

Described as a step-up product from its existing GeForce 8800 GT card, nVidia claims the GTS model “delivers impressive new levels of performance in the $299 to $349 range”.

nVidia says the GeForce 8800 GTS offers 25 percent more graphics processing power than previous nVidia cards in this price range. The new graphics card adds support for PCI Express 2.0, dual-link HDCP (high-definition content protection) as found on Blu-ray and HD-DVD devices and an updated version of nVidia’s PureVideo HD graphics-processing engine.

According to nVidia, the beauty of the PureVideo HD engine is that it able to assume the entire H.264 video decoding task, thereby taking the strain off the PC. The result is a reduction of power consumption, heat and noise, nVidia says.
