Sony has unveiled its new MA series of headphones designed for TV, music and gaming.

The flagship model of the range is the MDR-MA900 which has large 70mm drivers and an acoustic bass lens for 'powerful' sound. Sony said it’s the first time a drive this size has been used in its open-backed headphones.

The MA900 model has a full open style and lightweight design using aluminium and magnesium. It has a frequency response of 5Hz to 40,000Hz, a 3m cord and a gold plated audio jack.

Sony said: "Treat yourself to a more spacious, relaxed listening experience with a new range of open-type headphones from Sony. Beautifully styled and comfortable to wear, the MA series is tailored for great sound in the home – whether you’re watching TV, listening to a hi-fi, gaming or browsing videos on your PC or tablet."

The MDR-MA500 and MDR-MA300 both have a comfortable ear-fit mechanism designed for long periods of use. These, along with the MDR-MA100, have a 40mm driver.

The MRD-MA100TV is designed for use with a TV and has a similar specification to the MA100. However, the headphones have a 5m cord and an in-line volume control.

Sony said the range of MA headphones will be available from May.
