Philips Fidelio DS9000 iPod dock

Philips has launched an iPod dock with more than a couple of references to furniture design.

The Philips Fidelio DS9000 is intended to replicate the voices and instruments of the original track as faithfully as possible for "pure, audiophile sound".

To this end, Philips says it has used top-grade audio components and clad the Fidelio player in a sustainably-sourced wooden veneer. The veneer application process, borrowed from industrial furniture production techniques, involves adding layer upon layer of wood veneer, building up to a thickness of 12mm. The veneer is then bent around the Fidelio's frame with the curved edges gently deflecting the sound without distorting it.

The Philips Fidelio DS9000 iPod dock has a digital iPod and iPhone connector to make the most of Philips's PureDigital sound-processing technology. The dock's speaker has a pair of 1in low-distortion tweeters and two inverted dome 4in woofers.

Adjustments to the output can be made using the EQ settings offered by the Fidelio+ app which can be downloaded to an iPhone or iPod touch.

The Fidelio DS9000 comes with alarm clock and musical alarm options and, unusually, boasts a proximity sensor that prompts the controls to wake up as you approach. There is also a remote control supplied with the device.

The Philips Fidelio DS9000 costs £399 and is available in the UK now.
