Philips GoGear Opus video MP3 player

Philips GoGear Opus video MP3 playerPhilips is kicking off summer with the launch of its 4GB, 8GB and 16GB GoGear Opus video MP3 players.

The Philips player has a 2.8in QCGA colour screen and an operationable time of up to 30 hours of audio playback or six hours of video viewing before its built-in battery needs recharging.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the Opus, however, is that it's one of the handful of portable players to support BBC iPlayer downloads. You can buy and download video from a range of online sites and play it on the Opus. The player also supports audio books bought from Audible.com.

The GoGear Opus has an FM radio with 20 station presets, can play MP3, FLAC, WMA and AAC tracks including iTunes songs without digital rights management protection.

Subscription music services such as Napster are supported, as are tracks with DRM protection that conform to the Windows Media DRM for Portable Devices standard.

Jpeg photos can be displayed on the 320x240-pixel display and video is played back at up to 30fps (frames per second). Mpeg 4 and WMV9 video is natively supported and Philips supplies a CD containing video conversion software for other formats. These include AVI and MOV files.

A Windows Vista or XP SP2 PC is required in order to make use of the conversion software and to play DRM-protected content.

Philips earphones and a carry pouch are also included.

The 8GB model goes onsale imminently for £99.99 inc VAT, while pricing has yet to be announced for the 16GB model.
