As rumours suggested, Apple has announced a new iMac so here's what you need to know about the iMac with Retina 5K display release date, price and specs. See also: iMac with Retina 5K first-look review.

Alongside the iPad Air 2iPad mini 3, and new Mac mini, Apple unveiled the latest iMac which comes with what it calls the Retina 5K display and, of course, OS X Yosemite.

“Thirty years after the first Mac changed the world, the new iMac with Retina 5K display running OS X Yosemite is the most insanely great Mac we have ever made,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With a breathtaking 14.7 million pixel display, faster CPU and graphics, Fusion Drive, and Thunderbolt 2, it’s the most beautiful and powerful iMac ever.”

Like some previous Apple launches, the new iMac with Retina 5K display starts shipping today (16 October) from £1,999.

Upgrading the processor, storage, memory and grapics take things to £3,519.

The main feature, if you hadn't worked it out yet,  it is the new iMacs 27in display which Apple calls the Retina 5K. It also calls it the most the amazing iMac it has ever built. The screen is 27in and uses a resolution of 5120 x 2880 which means it has a whopping 14.7 million pixels and Apple says it is 'the world's highest resolution display'.

The resolution means there are seven times more pixels than Full HD and 67 percent more than 4K.

Apple had fitted that screen to the new iMac which is 5mm thick. The display uses a custom made timing controller which has four times more bandwidth. It uses Oxide TFT, photo alignment organic passivation for reducing crosstalk. With power-efficient LEDs is uses 30 percent less energy.

Moving on from the display and the iMac with Retina 5K display has an Intel Core i5 3.5GHz quad-core processor which is upgradable to a Core i7. There's 8GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon M9 M290X GPU.

It also includes Thunderbolt 2, a 1TB Fusion Drive and an Energy Star 6.1 rating.
