New MacBook Pro has Retina display

Highest ever resolution laptop display

Apple today announced the latest version of its MacBook Pro laptop at its WWDC keynote in San Francisco. The new Retina display MacBook Pro is available immediately, and starts from £1,799 inc VAT, ranging up to £2,299. Here are full details of the new MacBook Pro with Retina display. See also: Apple launches MacBook Air.

The new MacBook Pro was described as "the quintessential professional notebook" by Apple's Phil Schiller, making the announcement, as he revealed that the 15in MacBook Pro comes with an amazingly detailed HD display. The Retina display has a resolution of 2880x1800 pixels, described by Schiller as "A breakthrough in display engineering." See all MacBook reviews.

The MacBook Pro comes in 13in and 15in flavours, but it's the new 15in Retina display Pro that will capture the attention. Like the MacBook Air models come with Intel Ivy Bridge processors with speeds of up to 2.7GHz. The 15in can be upgraded to a quad-core i7 chip, and the higher spec 13in model has 8GB RAM. The MacBook Pro's chip comes with 1600MHz memory, and integrated graphics that Apple and Intel claims are up to 60 percent faster.

Like the MacBook Air, also announced tonight, the new MacBook Pro models sport combined USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Unlike the Air, however, the MacBook Pro models come with discrete graphics cards: in this case nVidia GeForce GT 650M graphics.

Put simply you can have Intel's fastest quad-core processors: up to 2.7GHz i7 chips, which Turbo Boost will take up to 3.2GHz. You can also configure up to 768GB of solid-state storage, and up to 16GB of 1600MHz RAM. This should be a fast machine.

And despite the HD screen, Apple is claiming up to 7 hours of battery life, and 30 days of standby, and the I/O ports include SD card, HDMI out, combined USB 3.0/USB 2.0 on either side, two Thunderbolt ports and a 3.5mm headphone socket. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0. The new MacBook Pro comes with a glass Multi-Touch trackpad, and a beautiful backlit keyboard, and there's an HD FaceTime camera and stereo speakers. It has a motorized display and is surprisingly thin for a full-spec laptop - just 1.8cm thick when closed.

MacBook Pro: thin

Visually, the new MacBook Pro simply looks different, and that staggeringly high-definition display is likely to stop traffic. Schiller described the Pro as "the most beautiful computer we have ever made", and British Apple designer Jony Ive said the Pro is: "The very best computer that we've ever built." The 15.4in display has a pixel density of 2880x1800, or around 220ppi. It's a 15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2880x1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch with support for millions of colours.
