HP is set to add a new model to its range of netbooks. The HP Mini 5101 will be a 10.1in laptop that runs off an Intel Atom N280 processor and that comes with Windows Vista as one of the operating system options.
Contrary to details about the Mini 5101 that were originally released by HP last week, the netbook will have an LED backlit screen (rather than an organic light-emitting diode one). It's keyboard will be 95 percent of the size of a standard laptop keyboard.

Two contrasting notebooks are currently attracting attention, but only one of them marks a landmark in laptop design.
In the interests of topicality, we won't dwell too much on HP's tiny dv2 laptop, which was announced back in January. We'll simply nudge your memory by mentioning that this 12in portable runs the low-power AMD Athlon Neo 64 processor and sits in the nebulous area between dawdling netbook and dashing notebook.

So what exactly is a smartbook, aside from a term drawn from the the obvious blend of smartphone and netbook?

Luxury goods will continue to sell, even in the depths of an economic recession. As they say in the restaurant business, people still need to eat. But we're less familiar with products aimed at the overtly affluent within the PC world.
Dell has taken aim at the richer laptop buyer with its Adamo notebook computer. It's no ordinary machine, with pretensions of desirability well beyond those of a bog-standard laptop. And, as Dell's marketers know, the element of desire is the Adamo's trump card. After all, in terms of specs, it does nothing that a laptop half the price couldn't do just as well.

Today's mini laptops have got some serious stamina. We tested the latest netbooks to see which had the sturdiest battery life.
Just a few months ago, you were lucky to squeeze much more than a couple hours out of netbooks such as the Acer Aspire One and the Lenovo IdeaPad S10. But tiny little netbooks are growing more robust, at least as far as their batteries are concerned. Here's a look at some recent models that can keep you plugging along for nearly a full workday.

If you're hunting for a new laptop, you're spoiled for choice. You can plump for a model with two screens, another that runs for 24 hours on a single battery charge, or a bargain machine that costs less than £200. It's easy to see why the versatile laptop has become the format of choice for the majority of computer buyers.
The third quarter of 2008 marked the first time more laptops were sold than desktop PCs worldwide, a milestone described by an analyst from iSuppli as signalling "the start of the age of the notebook". In truth, however, the concept of a battle between desktop PCs and laptops is rapidly becoming outdated as we are faced with an increasing number of alternative hardware formats. Whether you need a device for word processing, accessing the web or sending emails when you're on the move, you no longer need a laptop to do it.

Does Apple's denigration of netbooks set the stage for a new Apple product?
As someone who's fascinated by the idea of Apple doing some sort of small device - not necessarily a netbook, but something bigger than an Apple iPod touch and smaller than an Apple MacBook - I pay close attention to what Apple says about the netbook market.

Can you use netbooks for business? The answer depends on your specific needs, but there's a good chance you can with current hardware. And more powerful, upcoming hardware is even more likely to work. Here's how to figure out if you can save money with netbooks.
Don't rely on netbooks beyond their light-use design. If you're replacing aging desktop PCs, netbooks will likely run at similar speeds without any perceived upgrade over the old hardware.
