Asus and HP's big fight for tiny hearts, minds and digits

April 28, 2008

We're living in a miniaturised world. Small is beautiful and it's all Asus' fault.

After a recent impromptu bout of pub olympics, PC Advisor emerged the triumphant winners of a ‘pool table'. Alas, our dreams of dotcom-boom office chic (and time-wasting) were dashed when our prize turned out to be a miniature toy, useful only to light-fingered Lilliputians. Tiny frisbees and inflatable chairs remain on order.

Does Vista fit in to today's laptop market?

April 7, 2008

It seems the term ‘laptop’, as used for a portable computer you can rest on your lap, may be falling into disuse. Acer, Apple, Compaq, HP, NEC and Panasonic are among the major brands who studiously avoid the L-word these days.

Maybe it’s because many notebooks – the now-popular name – will become fearsomely hot as you put them to task, and corporate manufacturers would like to avoid lawsuits for scorching owners’ legs after suggesting that was a good place to site said computer.

XP-based Eee PC price & availability revealed

March 13, 2008

With new models on show at CeBIT, it looks like Asus' Eee PC is set to continue to be a runaway success. The long-rumoured Windows XP version finally made an appearance at the Hannover trade show, making the Eee PC an even more attractive purchase for those who want a tiny ultraportable, but are wary of Linux.

The only potential stumbling block was the price: how much would the addition of XP add to the cost of the original Eee PC, which is available for £220? Well, not much, according to Asus partner RM.

All that glitters... is a MacBook Air

March 4, 2008

If you fancy an unusual MacBook Air that stands out from the crowd, why not invest in a bling-tastic version that has been customised with 12,000 Swarovski Elements crystals? For extra opulence, the crystals have been coated from underneath with 24-carat gold so they reflect a true gold colour.

Golden Age, which was created by Ayano Kimura, chief designer of Bling My Thing, was inspired by a traditional Japanese pattern. There's one catch, however: the 20 laptops that have been produced cost a cool £20,000 each.

CeBIT: XP-based Asus Eee PC - I WANT ONE

March 4, 2008

Note to Father Christmas: I realise that your big day is a ways off, but I am going to be a good boy, and I do want an Asus Eee PC. One with an 8in screen and Windows XP please.

And not just me. Attending a press launch for an unrelated product here at CeBIT yesterday morning, I couldn't help but notice that at least a couple of the cream of the UK IT press corps (curdled cream at the time) were toting Asus' tiny and inexpensive Linux-based (ultra) ultraportable - but not (yet) the new versions.

Eee PC to get Windows XP & Wimax at Cebit?

March 3, 2008

We've heard it all before, of course, but a Windows XP Eee PC and a WiMax Eee PC look more likely than ever. According to various online reports, the launches will happen at the week's Cebit trade show in Hanover, and the rumours aren't simply based on hearsay and speculation.

Asus has confirmed that both Microsoft and T-Mobile will make an appearance at its Cebit press conference later this week, suggesting that the two companies are about to join the Eee PC bandwagon. Around 350,000 of the tiny laptops were believed to have shipped in the first three months of availability (up until January), and Asus' promise at CES of larger screen versions with more storage capacity (current models ship with up to 8GB of storage) has maintained interest during the first two months of 2008.

FAQ: MacBook Air's solid-state disk

January 25, 2008

When it comes to storage, the newly unveiled MacBook Air offers an 80GB, 4,200rpm Parallel ATA hard drive as part of its standard configuration. However, that's not the only option - would-be MacBook Air buyers can also order the laptop with a 64GB solid-state drive (SSD).

The price for that downgrade in storage capacity: $999 on top of the $1,799 asking price in the US for the standard MacBook Air. So why would you pay so much more for less? Because, for some mobile users, solid-state storage is a compelling alternative to traditional hard drives.
