Like us, you probably have your icons exactly where you want them on the Windows desktop. Perhaps you group applications together in different areas of the screen, or like a certain layout.

Unfortunately, Windows offers no way to save icon positions and everything from connecting a second monitor to changing the screen resolution can mess up that layout.

The solution is to use a free utility: IconRestorer. This lets you save icon layouts on multiple monitors, and even the wallpaper. You can save multiple layouts for different screen resolutions, and also set the program to automatically save the layout on Windows shutdown.

If anything then changes that layout, you can easily restore it by launching the program and clicking the restore button.

IconRestorer works in all versions of Windows back to XP, and also supports 64-bit OSes.
