QUESTION In the course of trying to upgrade a four-year-old laptop from Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 to SP2 I hit a problem. The update process got to the final step, then declared that SP2 cannot be installed and displayed a command-prompt screen. I have rolled back the laptop to its previous state, but please advise me on how I can install SP2. K Welbeck
HELPROOM ANSWER This problem is often caused when programs or drivers are installed that need to be removed before the SP can be applied.
Security and antivirus programs can also cause an installation to fail. These should be uninstalled prior to the update, then immediately reinstalled. It's also advisable to unplug any peripherals from your machine.
To help prepare your PC for the update, you can run Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool. This will check your system for inconsistencies and other problems that may prevent the SP update from working.
