How to upgrade to Windows 8.1: you must install this important update

Get new features for free and continue to receive security updates

Windows 8.1 is a free update for computers running Windows 8 and it's well worth upgrading. Here’s how to update.

First, it’s worth backing up any important data since there’s always a chance something will go awry. The process is no different from the monthly Windows updates you’re used to, but it isn’t worth the risk if you don’t have backups already.

UPDATE: If you can't see the Windows 8.1 Update in the Windows Store, click this link. Also, make sure you install any pending updates as some users have reported that the 8.1 update didn't show up until all other apps were up to date.

Step 1.
Once everything important is backed up, head to the Windows Store from the Start Screen and you should see a message saying that the Windows 8.1 update is ready. Tap on it.

Step 2.
Tap Install and the update will be downloaded. You can carry on working on your computer for a while as this happens. The progress bar will keep you updated on the status of the upgrade.

Step 3.
A notification will pop up when the update needs to restart your PC. If you don’t respond it will automatically restart after 15 minutes.

Update to Windows 8.1 Step 3

Step 4.
Your PC, laptop or tablet will restart a few times and eventually you’ll see a Licence Terms screen. Tap I accept to continue, and choose your preference for setup on the next screen. Last of all, type your password and sign in to your Microsoft account.

Update to Windows 8.1 Step 4

Now you can enjoy the new features in Windows 8.1, such as the ability to boot straight to the traditional desktop and shut down your PC from a 'start menu'. For more on these, see our Windows 8.1 review.
