How to change the main user account on a Windows 8 device
QUESTION When I first set up my wife's new Windows 8 laptop, I used my Microsoft Live ID for the user account. My wife would like to change it to her own Live ID, but I don't want to have to re-install the programs and apps that we have loaded. Is there a way to do this?
HELPROOM ANSWER To change the Live ID used as the primary account, you must first convert it to a Local User account.
First, go to the Windows 8 Start screen and type "users", then click on Settings.
Now click Users from the search results on the left of the screen.
In here you will see the option to switch to a local account. Select this option and enter your Microsoft Live ID password to continue. You will be asked to provide a user name and password for the local account, after which you will be signed out so you can sign back in with the local account details.
Once you have signed in, repeat the process up until switching account types.
Now you will have the option to switch back to a Microsoft account. Select this option and enter the details of the Microsoft Live ID you wish to use.
Follow the instructions on screen and restart the computer to sign in with your new Microsoft Live ID.
This should leave you with the system much as before, but using your wife's Microsoft Live ID instead of yours.
