How to change the colour of a folder in Windows 7

Find the folder you need by changing its colour

Unlike Mac  OS X, Windows doesn't allow you to change the colour of folders. This means you can end up searching through a sea of yellow icons to find the folder you need.

With the free Folderico utility installed, you can right-click on a folder and choose which colour you want it to be. Then, instead of searching through a list of folder names, you'll instantly see the one you want. See all How to articles

Go to Shedko's website and click the green 'Download (mirror)' button to download Folderico 4.0. You'll be taken to a file hosting site such as Oron. You don't need to sign up for a premium account - it's always possible to download for free but you may have to wait a minute or so before the Captcha box appears.

Type in the two words and a new page will load with a blue Download link. Click this and then unzip the file when it has downloaded. Run it and follow the instructions to install it. Finally click Finish.

Folderico installed

Now, a Folderico option will appear when you right-click on a folder.

Folderico right-click menu

Click it and then click the Select icon... button.

Folderico program window

Click on the Windows 7 folders and a range of colours will be displayed on the right-hand side - highlight the one you want and click the Select button.

Choose colour

Finally click Apply and then Close to close the Folderico window. Your folder should have changed colour but if not, tap F5 to refresh the Explorer window and it should update:
