QUESTION When I press the Back button to cycle through a multi-page online catalogue, Google Chrome has started producing warning messages. I also find that extra tabs open containing a message about 'flag switches'. Is my machine infected? Jane Laing

HELPROOM ANSWER This is a rare problem, but nothing to do with malware. Google Chrome regularly updates itself in the background, and the messages you're seeing are probably caused by the process failing partway through and corrupting the shortcut used to launch the browser. The broken shortcut then causes the browser to launch with the extra tabs entitled '—flag-switches-begin' and '—flag-switches-end', as you describe.

To get rid of these messages, you should delete any shortcuts to the program, then manually download and install the latest version of Google Chrome.
