  • How-Tos: How to uninstall troublesome software

I installed System Mechanic from a recent PC Advisor cover DVD. Its Windows installer pops up whenever I turn on my machine and seems to think there’s a CD in the drive when there isn’t. I can disable it using the Services (local) shortcut, and have to go through this process every time I restart. I don’t have an external backup to copy files to, and I’m not confident enough to reinstall Windows.

  • How-Tos: How to fix a Windows startup error

When I power on my Windows XP Pro Lenovo laptop I get the error message: ‘Windows did not start successfully. This could be due to software or hardware change’. It then gives options to start in Safe mode or Recovery, or to Start normally after 10 seconds. Whichever option I choose, the screen goes black and the power switches off by itself. I've tried restoring the machine to its factory settings, but the same problem occurs repeatedly.

My Windows 7 laptop has icons for both 32bit and 64bit Internet Explorer. I have no problems using the 32bit version, but the 64bit software wants to install Adobe Flash Player every time I visit a news site. If I click on the yellow bar at the top of the window and accept the installation, nothing happens. I’m confused about 64bit and its benefits if it won’t work with some websites.

  • How-Tos: How to change your web browser's home page

I have a shortcut on my desktop that’s supposed to launch my web browser and navigate to my ISP’s home page, sky.com. When I click on it, an error message reports: ‘could not locate internet’. My PC launches Internet Explorer, but I have to manually browse to the ISP’s website. I haven’t knowingly changed any settings.
